In November 2018, I had the pleasure of being the first artist chosen to create a set of 3 shoe designs for Nike on the occasion of the 2018 Shanghai Marathon and the opening of their flagship "House of Innovation", a store using cutting edge techniques to make your own pair of shoes in house. For this purpose, I created a new art work, CITY DNA Shanghai No. 12 to use as the base from which to customize the shoes (now also a large acrylic painting, and a silk screen limited edition print series), the aerial view of which covered part of the marathon route and also Nike's flagship store location.
I had the great honor of meeting and making friends with Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge, holder of the world marathon record, along with super model Ju Xiaowen, and together in store we created three different pairs of shoes by hand, using the advanced machinery and techniques in use. Nike felt the choice of myself as the artist involved had relevance, as it is a long steady effort to create my larger paintings, not unlike running a marathon. It is a mental and physical endurance test, but one which in the end brings great satisfaction at the finish line.
